WHEN IS COUNSELING RECOMMENDED?

While life can be hard at times, there are seasons of life that are especially difficult. To answer the question, “When should you seek counseling?” think medically for a moment. We all get headaches at times. However, if you are having severe headaches on a consistent basis, it’s time to see a medical professional. Contacting a counselor to help you face life’s difficulties is a similar situation.

Difficult Life Circumstances

Every couple disagrees, kids have a hard day or two at school, and we all have days of discouragement or stress. However, when these troubles aren’t periodic, but rather become the norm, then it’s time to get help.

In addition, there are other situations that only need to happen once before you need help: divorce, domestic violence, attempted suicide or suicide itself, shocking revelations about someone in your family, or the death of a loved one.

Answer These Questions

To help you decide whether you need help, read through and answer the following questions.

  • Do I have persistent problems or struggles that won’t go away?
  • Have I recently gone through a divorce? Did I go through a divorce years ago but still feel stuck in hurt or anger?
  • Have I experienced any form of abuse in the past or present?
  • Have I been through or witnessed traumatic events?
  • Are key relationships in my life chronically difficult?
  • Am I regularly anxious—even if I don’t understand why I am anxious?
  • Are my kids demonstrating behaviors that aren’t typical for them?
  • Am I or my spouse having an affair or have either of us had an affair in the past?
  • Am I struggling with how to parent my child?
  • Do I regularly feel hopeless, dark, or without direction and purpose?
  • Is anyone in my family drinking, using drugs, working too much, or spending excessively with the result of fracturing family relationships?
  • Are my significant other and myself fighting more than what’s normal for us or has our style of conflict become more intense and hurtful?
  • Do I regularly feel numb, dead, angry, or sad?
