HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR CHILD/TEEN NEEDS COUNSELING

Last Updated: February 11, 2026By

In today’s world, it can be tough being a kid. Social media, bullies, achievement pressure, appearance concerns, fitting in, parental expectations, divorce and the breakdown of the family, all combine to make today’s children more depressed and anxious than previous generations. Counseling with a therapist with special training and experience in working with kids can be the key to providing tools for healthy ways to deal with the stressors in your child’s life.

Answer These Questions

Ask yourself these questions to determine whether your child needs help that a counselor can provide.

  • Your child’s teacher reports academic problems such as inattentiveness in class, disorganization, can’t sit still in class, inability to complete tasks, sudden moodiness, extreme disobedience or refusal to participate, extreme disrespect to others.
  • Your family experiences a crisis such as divorce, death of a loved one or a pet, terminal/life threatening illness of self or loved one, car accident, house fire, molestation, victimization.
  • Your child is behaving differently than normal, for example, sleeping extensively, self harming, complains of overwhelming/uncontrollable emotions, inattentiveness, impulsivity, blatant disrespect for all authority, uncontrollable temper tantrums, extreme isolation, or inability to be disconnected from electronics.
  • YOUR CHILD ASKS to see a counselor.
